Tally Gate Recording
When the weather was dry, it was a great opportunity to complete a traffic survey to practise the tally gate system of recording. First we discussed and agreed what we were going to survey and for how long. We also discussed what we would classify as a car, van or lorry.
We completed two different traffic surveys each lasting 15 minutes. The first was a survey of car colours. Beforehand, we predicted what the most frequent colours of cars might be, made a selection and included an ‘other’ group.
The second survey focussed on vehicle types including lorries, vans, cars, tractors, motorbikes and others.
While completing the survey, we became familiar with maths vocabulary including ‘survey’, ‘frequency’ and ‘gate tally’.
