Observing & Identifying!

29th May 2025

With our leaf identification sheets at hand, we searched for a variety of trees and shrubs within our village and immediate environment.

We can now identify the ash from the rowan (mountain ash). In our school grounds we found examples of oak, elder, hazel, horse chestnut and holly.  In Fair green we spotted lime, sycamore and, close by, a young copper beech tree.  We also noticed different types of variegated leaves.

We learnt that wherever you see a flower, you will notice a fruit (such as a berry, seed or nut) develop some time later.  We saw bramble that produces blackberries and dog roses that produce crimson red rose hips in late summer early autumn.

Miss Graham pointed out the yew trees in the graveyard that are poisonous to most mammals.  She shared one reason why they are found in graveyards.

After all our hard work, we were treated to 10 or 15 minutes free time in the village park!
