PRIMARY ONE: Friday 29th May 2020

Phonics:

Dictation sentence:  A wet pet is at the vet.

Mental Maths:

I can add 1 to any number within 10.

  • Jumble up your digit cards. Pick one at random and quickly say what is “Add 1 “ to that number. If no answer within 1 second then big person wins the card. How many did you get to keep by the end?  Where you the same, better or WORSE than yesterday :0

So.. how do you feel about adding 1 to any number – are you better this week than last? Remember this is a key P1 skill – keep practicing!

Numeracy:

I can add 1.

Find the “Addition “ worksheet with the 6 faces at top.

It will be easier to complete the second column first!

Use your numberline – read the sum first eg 6 + 1 equals

Put your two peter pointers on the first number [make sure your child reads the sum themselves and finds the correct number!]

Ask – “how many will you add on?” “How do you know” [check they are reading the sum]

Now jump you right finger up and down to get ready to jump because we are going to add and that means going UP the numberline.

Now take 1 jump because we are adding 1.

Where did you get to?

Now record your answer.

Complete second column and then first column. Make sure your child is jumping ON for the first count and not jumping on the spot! [common mistake]

Once they have got the hang of it, leave them to complete the rest by themselves.

Topic work:

Caterpillars are types of what? Yes creepy crawlies or minibeasts.  There are lots in the gardens at the moment because they are having a feast of my cabbage and kale plants!

Today you are going on a Minibeast Hunt!  Do you know the best places to find them?  They usually like somewhere dark and moist like under stones, logs and leaves. BUT it is very important not to disturb their home and put things back again carefully!

Find the “Minibeast Tally Sheet” from your pack. Do you know what a tally is? It is a count.

P2 – you can use a bar gate method  where you put a down stroke for the first 4 and then you put a cross stroke for number 5. Then you start a new tally. It means when adding up you can count in 5s!.

Have fun!
